Secret Beach is Worth the Trip!
Despite the somewhat misleading name, Secret Beach is not a very big secret. Rather, Secret Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Belize – certainly on Ambergris Caye!Â
Secret Beach is the place to go if you crave a well-manicured beach, complete with lounge chairs, cabanas, and services. It’s one of the most visited places on Ambergris Caye, and it’s well worth the trip for a relaxing day on the beach.Â
Secret Beach is located on the west side of Ambergris Caye – an area of the island that wasn’t reachable (except by boat) until about ten years ago when the road connecting the two sides was constructed. The west side of Ambergris Caye has much nicer beaches, especially for swimming, while the reef side is perfect for diving and snorkeling.Â
The calm swimmable waters at Secret Beach are what make it such a great spot to spend a day – and that is why it’s such a popular spot for both tourists and locals. At Secret Beach, you can expect to find a shallow, sandy-bottomed area filled with crystal clear, turquoise waters. You can walk out here quite a ways, and the calm waters make it perfect for a casual swim or float. Talk about relaxing!Â
To get to Secret Beach, you’ll need to rent a golf cart – the only mode of transportation on the island besides walking and biking – and maybe a taxi or two. We are more than happy to help you rent a golf cart for the day – which, like Secret Beach, also happens to be a formative “must-do” experience in San Pedro!
You can expect the drive to Secret Beach to take around 45 minutes, sometimes more or less, depending on the traffic for the day. There’s plenty to see along the way though, including mangroves, lagoons, birds, and even the occasional crocodile on the sides of the road.
Once you get to Secret Beach, scope out a spot and get ready to relax. There are several Beach Clubs to choose from and great bars and restaurants to keep you well-fed and hydrated throughout your day at the beach. Ask us about our favorite beach clubs before you head to Secret Beach – we’ll give you the local’s insider guide!Â
Due to the popularity of Secret Beach, we do recommend you get there relatively early in the day, especially during busier travel times.Â
More Great Beaches in Belize
As fantastic as Secret Beach is, it’s really just one of the great beaches in Belize worth visiting. Though there are plenty of things to do in San Pedro and the waters surrounding Ambergris Caye, it’s hard to argue with a day spent lounging at the beach. Of course, some of the best beaches aren’t very well developed – but they are far less crowded and noisy and perfect for the ultimate afternoon of relaxation.Â
If you want to explore more great beaches in Belize beyond Secret Beach, then either end of Ambergris Caye is calling your name. One of the best beaches in Belize, especially if you want to do some swimming, is found across from Ramon’s Village Resort. The sands are raked, and the waters are calm and crystal clear. Mar de Tumbo also offers an excellent beach and is just a short walk from San Pedro – and our San Pedro hotel!Â
If you’re looking for even more beach experiences in Belize, we recommend hopping a ferry to Caye Caulker, a sister island to Ambergris Caye. The ferry ride is beautiful and takes around 30 minutes. Once there, you’ll find a much more relaxed, slower vibe and some really gorgeous beaches. There are beaches right in front of our San Pedro hotel, too. However, we’re closer to the commercial center of town where many of the local boat companies come and go – so the boat traffic here makes this area less than ideal for swimming.Â
If you’re ready to sink your toes into the sand and soak up the best of the Caribbean, it’s time to book your room at our San Pedro hotel!Â
