Ultimate Guide to Planning a Belize Vacation

Planning a Belize vacation involves a lot of small decisions that add up fast. Which island, which flight, which hotel, and how many days to actually book. We hear these questions from first-time visitors all the time. Over the years, we've helped hundreds of guests plan their Belize vacations. Let's walk through the rest: getting here, where to stay, what to do, and when to go.

Quick Planning Guide

Planning a Belize vacation is easier than many travelers expect. Start by choosing how you'll get to Ambergris Caye and how long you'll stay. Four to seven nights gives you time to enjoy the reef, San Pedro, and a few unforgettable adventures. At Blue Tang Inn, we help arrange flights, transfers, tours, and local recommendations before you arrive.

Why Belize Is Such an Easy Vacation to Love

Belize is one of the easiest Caribbean destinations to plan for.

  • English is the official language, so there's no need to guess at translations at the airport or the dinner table.

  • The US dollar works everywhere on Ambergris Caye, and the Belize dollar is pegged to it at two to one.

  • Cell service is reliable across the island, and most hotels, including ours, offer free WiFi. Staying in touch with home is simple.

One local tip: keep some small USD bills on hand, since a few smaller tour operators and vendors around town don't take cards.

How to Get to Ambergris Caye

Once you land at Belize City's international airport, getting to Ambergris Caye is simple. Most travelers book a short flight with Maya Island Air, departing from the domestic terminal right next to international arrivals. Flights run roughly every hour and take just 15 to 20 minutes. We arrange this leg for our guests. We also include a complimentary round-trip taxi transfer to our door.

Prefer the water? The San Pedro Belize Express water taxi takes about 90 minutes. It costs around $15 each way, with a two-bag limit per passenger. A private boat transfer costs closer to $140 per person round trip.

However you arrive, our front desk can help book every leg before you leave home.

Where to Stay in Belize for the Best Experience

Where you stay shapes the whole trip. Ambergris Caye has plenty of large resorts, but we keep things smaller on purpose. Blue Tang Inn has just 14 guest suites, from economy rooms to full oceanfront suites. Many open onto private balconies with ocean views.

Every suite includes a kitchen, private bath, and air conditioning. A continental breakfast comes with every stay, so mornings start easy. We sit right on the beach and are only a short walk from town. Our local staff runs the front desk and the concierge desk. The same person booking your snorkel trip can also point you toward dinner. That's hard to find at a 200-room resort.

Here's what one recent guest had to say on Google:

"Perfect location, right on the beach. Very clean and good little breakfast in the morning. Close to everything. We walked pretty much everywhere. Directly in front of the hotel is a great sports bar called Palapa Bar and Grill, overlooking the water."

Water Adventures on the Belize Barrier Reef

Ambergris Caye sits along the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system on Earth. That's the main draw for most visitors.

Snorkel or dive Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, both about 10 minutes offshore by boat. Hol Chan is a protected channel through the reef, alive with coral, turtles, and reef fish. Shark Ray Alley sits just next door, where nurse sharks and stingrays gather to feed.

Further out, the Great Blue Hole draws divers to its perfectly round, 400-foot-deep sinkhole. Our dive partners also run trips to Turneffe Atoll, a bit farther out but worth it for experienced divers. We arrange one- to three-tank dive trips, plus night dives for anyone who wants to see the reef after dark.

Prefer something gentler? Head toward Mangrove Caye, a quiet habitat for West Indian manatees. Watch them surface for air in the shallow water.

Sail aboard our 40-foot Sirena Azul, built by hand in the traditional style of a Belizean fishing boat. We run half-day snorkel trips, full-day sails to Mexico Rocks and Coral Gardens, and sunset cruises with drinks included.

If fishing is more your speed, the flats and reef here are known for tarpon, bonefish, and snapper. We can book a half-day or full-day charter.

Life in San Pedro Town

San Pedro Town itself is worth exploring on its own. Rent a golf cart, since that's the main way to get around besides walking or biking. Browse the shops and art galleries downtown, and stop by the Belize Chocolate Company for a tasting.

When the sun goes down, the town's bars and beach clubs pick up the pace. Live music runs most nights. Our favorite is Palapa Bar and Grill, right at the end of our pier. You can wade right into the water with a drink in hand. Beyond that, you can feast on fresh ceviche, conch fritters, and fry jacks at nearly every restaurant in town.

Need a beach day that doesn't involve a boat? Secret Beach is a short golf cart ride away, and it's free once you're there.

If you want to see another island, hop the ferry to Caye Caulker for an afternoon. It's a slower, quieter island than Ambergris Caye, known for its laid-back bars and a swimming spot locals call the Split.

It's worth the day trip.

Mayan Ruins and Mainland Day Trips

Ready to trade the beach for the jungle? We run day trips to the mainland for anyone who wants a break from the water.

A few of our favorite sites:

  • Altun Ha – the closest and most popular ruin site, with temples you can actually climb.

  • ATM Cave – a jungle hike, cave swim, and ancient artifacts in one trip.

  • Xunantunich and Cahal Pech – two more ruin sites further inland, each with their own temples and history.

  • Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun – remote sites south, better suited to a custom overnight trip.

Most of our day trips include cave tubing or ziplining as an add-on. We can bundle transportation, a guide, and lunch into a single package, so you don't have to arrange everything separately.

Belize Vacation Packages vs. Planning It Yourself

Most Belize vacations on Ambergris Caye run 4, 5, or 7 nights, and each length works well.

Four nights, like our Minivacation Package, gives you a real trip without eating your whole calendar. Five or seven nights leave room for a mainland day trip or a lazy day at Secret Beach.

You can build a Belize vacation piece by piece, booking each tour separately once you land. Many guests do exactly that.

Others compare us to traditional all-inclusive resorts and wonder how we stack up. We're not all-inclusive in the strict sense, since meals outside breakfast aren't automatically included.

But our packages bundle flights, transfers, and a full slate of tours. The planning burden ends up feeling a lot like booking an all-inclusive. You just get more flexibility, and a smaller, more personal property behind it.

The Relax & Explore Package includes:

  • A half-day sail and snorkel to Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley

  • 8 hours of golf cart rental

  • A full day of cave tubing and zip lining

  • Round-trip flights and a taxi transfer

Pricing runs $576 per adult and $540 per child, plus room and tax.

Our Minivacation Package goes further, adding a cooking class, a sunset sail, and an in-room massage. If diving or fishing is the whole point of your trip, our dedicated Scuba Diving Package and Fishing Package focus the itinerary around just that.

Either way, our concierge builds the schedule so you're not doing it from a hotel lobby. Booking direct with us also means you're talking straight to our team, with no booking site in between.

Best Time of Year to Plan Your Trip

November through April is peak season here, with the driest weather and calmest water for snorkeling. December through March books up fastest, especially with travelers escaping winter up north.

Plan ahead if those are your dates. May, June, and November are the months we personally recommend. The crowds thin out, rates ease up, and the weather is still lovely.

Hurricane season officially runs June through November, but Ambergris Caye is rarely hit directly. Afternoon showers in the rainy months usually clear within an hour.

Simple Belize Vacation Planning Tips

A few more things make planning easier:

  • Book early if you're arriving between December and March.

  • Bring a passport valid at least six months past your travel dates (travel tips).

  • Reserve a golf cart through our front desk before you land.

  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen and easy sandals.

Quick Answers for First-Time Visitors

Is San Pedro walkable?

Yes. The town center is small enough to cover on foot, though most visitors still rent a golf cart for longer trips.

Is Ambergris Caye good for families?

It is. Calm water, short boat rides, and kid-friendly suites make it an easy first international trip.

Do I need to exchange currency?

No. The US dollar is accepted everywhere, so there's no need to visit a currency exchange.
